In contrast, here is a small snip of the actual finding-Victor-on-the-beach scene: Not only that, but Victor won the World Championships in Tokyo mere days prior. Out walking on the beach, he finds a strange man lying in the sand - a foreigner who bares an uncanny resemblance to Yuuri’s idol, Victor Nikiforov.īut the man is too thin, unshaven, with his hair grown longer than Victor’s has been in years. Yuuri is finally back in Hasetsu after five long years away, still trying to decide if he’ll retire or continue skating. Here's are the first few lines of my "zero draft" for my last big Yuri!!! On Ice fic: Unfortunately I don't have a lot of examples because I tend to delete the zero draft/outline as I translate it into a "real" story, but I've held onto a couple just in case. However, I've had to re-term my outlines as a "zero draft" because I discovered that's really what I'm doing, a very fast and loose version of the story with almost no dialogue, just general descriptions. Basically I learned that the quality of my rough draft says very little about my ability as a writer, which has really freed me to up my writing speed.įor me it depends on what counts as a "draft." My first step in writing something is just the base idea and from there I create what I always referred to as an outline. I did sprints with people, hated what I wrote, then fixed up the passages afterwards and realised it's much easier to make crap words, then edit crap words into nicer words, than tear your hair out over a blank page. I used to struggle a lot with perfectionism and took ages to write anything - then I joined a writing group, and saw people's word counts for their works climbing up by 10k, 20k, 50k in the same time span I'd only written 5k, and realised I needed to change my strategy. I tend to underwrite to vomit the general outline of the chapter out, then flesh things out when I go back. Still not perfect, but better (I think.). Vats of oil hissed as sticks of dough, pig intestine, and pungent tofu were tossed in. Bamboo steaming baskets towered high behind counters, opened only long enough to lift a handful of rice noodle rolls out of them before they were slammed closed again. Had he ever offered anything like this to ghosts before? Steam curled through the night air from roiling pots of fat fishballs. And soon, the bizarre ordinariness of it all had him forgetting his embarrassment entirely. The sights of the food stalls were a welcome distraction from Xie Lian’s lingering mortification. People sat around eating fishballs and rice flour rolls, while vendors shouted over bubbling vats of oil frying pig intestine and stinky tofu. He'd never seen anyone offer things like this to ghosts before. Thankfully they soon got to the food street of the market, which turned out to be strangely normal.
